Yes Newbrain sould start and stop the tape recorder at will while loading or saving.
For loading you could do it manually meaning you should stop the tape when the screen stops and start after a few seconds but is not recommended you should fix your cable.

Would you know whether it matters if the remote wires (middle 2 pins) are able to be either way around. I have had to make my own cable set.

Solved : The remote issue was down to the cassette recorder not the Newbrain.

I do however have an issue with the program saving and not loading back. Pre-recorded commercial tapes load fine.

I plugged the mic output in to my PC and ran Audacity, there is a lot of noise even when it's not saving to cassette.

Does anyone have an idea what could be causing the noise and what I should check or change.

Back in the day, we had demagnetising tapes and tapes for cleaning the head maybe that will solve your problem.

Sorry should have said that I tried that before posting this topic, also the tape isn't involved when connecting it to my PC/Audacity and the noise is still there.
