Re: Newbrain PCB layout schematics

From Saphir17:

Hello Centrespot

There are none.
The NB was designed 1980-1981 and in those days the layout was most likely done on paper and film.

I have knowledge of one person that have drawn the entire NB and Expansion in Eagle, true to original design, but its not for public use.

You say ROM/RAM board. There is only a RAM board. The ROM's are on the main board.

If you or someone have the eager to take on the task, here are some design hints/requests :
- Use KiCAD 5.x. Eagle is becoming old quickly.
- The RAM Board : route for +5V RAM, not the old +-5V,12V (or even one static RAM. Needs some design changes thou)
- Do 4-layer for use of GND and VCC planes.
- Use SMD where possible.
- Use HCT/HC logic where possible.

Well.. just some thoughts.

Re: Newbrain PCB layout schematics

Hi,

I just started creating the schematics in KiCAD the problem is that the originals scans are inconsistent with themselves and reality. One of the things I'm looking for to help me is some detailed photographs of the mainboards where any print can be read. The more information the better.

Re: Newbrain PCB layout schematics

Hi

I have now changed pretty much all the Eagle CAD files to Kicad files.
I have also made a new Main Board equipped with SMD circuit, however, there are some that can not be replaced so it is still the old DIP.

Power section has been changed to only + 5V, the new power part can be fed with voltage from 5V to 12V without damage anything.

This Main board also requires a new RAM board as the logic circuits that sat on the RAM board are moving down on the Main Board, and it is also prepared for 128 Kb ram with jumper. smile

Re: Newbrain PCB layout schematics

Hi Chaps,

I'm new here, I had a newbrain in about 83, and have today once again got one, it has a fault with white screen and garbled VFD characters.

! Whilst diging for schematics, found the following; https://pjmarsh.co.uk/newbrain.pdf not sure of the original source but it has both the main board schematic plus the PCB track layout.

regards,

Paul
