External Tools

There are also some tools under the Tools Subdirectory:

  NB Digitizer 3 (NBDigit3.exe)
You can use this to produce binary files from recordings of Newbrain tapes.

The recording should have the folowing characteristics:
Wav File,   22Khz,  8bit,  Mono. Volume between -6  and -9 DB.
and  even better results with 44Khz,  8bit,  Mono. Volume between -6  and -9 DB.

Load the wav file from File-->Open
The wav file file is better to be in Tools\Wavs subdirectory.

There are three patterns that the program recognises.
Pilot this pattern is at start of every block and is usually quite long. Each one is double the size of One Or Zero

Pilot from the Blue line to the Red
You can select a pattern by clicking and dragging while shift is pressed. Then you can set it by using the Patterns tab and clicking on Set From Selection next to Pilot.
.
Clicking Pilot shows you the current pattern

Same goes for Zero and One.

One this is the Binary 1. Each one has 4 peaks.

Zero this is the binary 0. Each one has 2 peaks.

The Files inside the wavs subdir  "<wavname>_one.ini","<wavname>_zero.ini","<wavname>_pilot.ini" have the definitions of those patterns. You can change this files if you like.

Click the 1st button in the detection panel that has the label “start”.
if everything goes fine you should see something like that after a while (some seconds).

Sometimes errors may occur and you can easily correct those bytes/bits that are not easily recognised and then continue the detection by clicking on the "CONT." button.

By clicking on the number (1,128,0) you can set 0 or 1, you must also change the range by clicking and dragging the blue dotted lines to define the start and end of this bit. Only do this if the error is on a single bit that probably is distorted on tape not for every single bit on the file. If the bit are not recognisable then you must change the patterns or redigitise the tape.

Select File -> Save From the menu and <Wavfilename>.bas will be created in the same directory Tools/Wavs

Check Roms (CRoms.exe)

This program allows you to scan the roms and see what their header "says" for their content.

Newbrain Keyboard Mapping  (NBMapKeyb.exe)
